I had an unused smartphone lying around so decided to use it to make an internet radio for the kitchen.
* HTC Hero smartphone
* ‘Cygnet’ portable speaker set, 2x plugpacks – one standard 6V to power the speakers (soldered wires to the battery terminals) plus an old Motorola phone recharger with mini USB).
* ‘Butchered’ external hard drive box
Cut a suitable sized hole for charger cable usb plug and glue into case from underside (this was fiddly and I had to trim some of the plug plastic away to get a log enough plug for the Hero to plug into).
Drill small hole in case under the speakers where the power cable lead will enter
Glue speaker set to case (I used ‘Gorilla Glue but any plastic adhesive or epoxy would be fine)
Use cable ties to gather the excess power supply leads and tie under the case.
Plug in and go! (well, after installing suitable apps – I used TuneIn and A2Radio).
As an ex-kiwi (is there such a thing?), I miss listening to Auckland radio, hence the NewsTalkZB station!
